Significance of Omega-3 on Human Health and Delivery in Food & Confections
There has been an increasing demand for omega–3's, especially those enriched in eicosahexaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid. They are essential fatty acids and important components of a balanced diet. However, consumption of omega-3 is low and a nutritional deficiency exists. The health benefits of EPA and DHA from fish oil are well established for cardiovascular disease. However, there is a growing body of evidence for beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids (FA) for brain development and learning. They also play a role in neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and depression. The benefits of omega-3 will be briefly discussed across various life stages.
Fortification of food & beverages with fish oil could help to alleviate the nutritional gap. Sharon Platt will discuss encapsulation technologies that exist today to deliver fish oil into foods and confections. You will have the chance to taste a variety of foods with omega-3 fish oil added, review label claims and growing consumer awareness. Sharon Platt is Account Manager for Ocean Nutrition US, Inc., dedicated to wellness through innovation. Ocean Nutrition Canada Limited (ONC) is the innovator and supplier of MEG-3® brand Omega-3 EPA/DHA ingredients, from fish oil, to the global dietary supplement and healthy food markets.
